Various research and development (R&D) activities on different aspects of bamboo have been implemented and are being conducted by the government and non-government organizations. While substantial data and information on bamboo have been locally generated through the years, most of these remain unconsolidated and largely unexplored. Primarily, because the information and technologies locally generated in the past have not been effectively and widely disseminated to the public/end-users
With the growing global concern and advances in Information, Communication and Technology, many are willing to share and facilitate transfer of information regarding this commodity. A mechanism for consolidating, coordinating and supporting strategic and adaptive R&D information network on bamboo is envisioned.
This network will be computer-based databanks that will serve as repository of knowledge/information about this commodity. This will serve as an important development tool in enhancing the dissemination of available information/technologies generated from various R&D activities. It will also support, interconnect and share information and information facilities among sectors with common interests.
Tha main objectives of the network are:
- to serve as a focal point to various information on Philippine bamboo species
- to facilitate the sourcing, building-up, delivery and exchange of information on bamboo to support the sustainable development of natural resources, and
- to promote the versatility of bamboo to interested individuals who have access to the internet.

Featured Technology
Industrial Charcoal and Light Distillate (Vinegar)
In Japan, a method of producing industrial charcoal from thick-walled bamboo species has been developed. Likewise, the technology in the production of the transparent distillate produced from the process of carbonization known as "bamboo vinegar" was also developed.
Bamboo charcoal purifies and deodorizes water, keeps food fresh, and maintains soil alkalinity. It also generates infrared rays that help in the restoration of blood circulation. The light distillate (vinegar), which is produced by destructive distillation of bamboo in charcoal making, has multifarious high-value uses. It can be used as treatment for allergies and sore throat and as antiseptic. It is also now used as a modern source/component in making bathroom deodorizer and hair conditioner.
