UMMB Supplementation for Livestock

Technology Description:

The urea-molasses-mineral block or UMMB is a feed supplement which is solid, hard, compact, and water soluble. It is given to cattle, carabaos, sheep, and goats as a lick to supplement low quality roughages.

UMMB contains urea, molasses, salt, mineral mixture, bran, and vitamins ---all solidified by cement. It supplies fermentable nitrogen and energy, as well as by-pass protein and micro- and macro- minerals without the hassles of previous urea-molasses forms.

The amount of UMMB needed per animal depends on the weight and kind of animal as shown below. Generally, one block of 4 kg is good for ten days for an adult cattle or carabao. Animals younger than six months are not given the block.

    Kind/Weight

Amount (g) Per day

Adult cattle, 400 kg
Lactating cattle, 400-450 kg
Draught carabao, 350-400 kg
Adult sheep/goat, 15-20 kg

Investment requirement:

UMMB can be produced manually or mechanically. Total production cost, as per information from the Small Ruminants Center (SRC) at CLSU, ranges from Php800-900 depending on the prices of the ingredients/components. At present (March 2006), UMMB is sold at Php20 per kilo.

Application Areas:

This technology can be applied to all livestock-producing areas.
