1 ha farmland ready for planting with pineapple suckers
The Philippine Council for Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCARRD) through the Caraga Consortium for Agriculture, Forestry and Resources, Research and Development (CCARRD), Caraga Region turned over an initial amount of P28, 000.00 from the total amount of P250, 000.00 grants to Mr. Jacinto C. Maboles, Magsasakang Siyentista ng Surigao del Norte College of Agriculture and Technology (SNCAT) Farmers Information Technology Service (FITS).
Meanwhile, the local agricultural practices followed by the farmers are rudimentary in nature. The framework of introducing science and technology were not observed. These yielded very minimal volume and unpredictable harvest success. It encourages the farmers to stop farming and tend to devote their time doing idle chores.
This experience motivated the CCARD to extend financial assistance to one of the farmers to be utilized for the procurement of necessary inputs and other related activities for farming pineapple. It involves site selection, improved land preparation, acquisition of suckers, appropriate fertilizer application, weeding, system of induced flower introduction and watering.
It aims to increase the volume of production per cropping period. This will also showcase to the farmers around the promising yield of the commodity given an efficient input program management through farmers filed day. Further, this project promotes to improve the number of farmers in the neighboring barangays to farm pineapple.
Relatively, suckers developed and produced after farming will be utilized by the prospective pineapple farmers in the community for their agricultural activities through an introduction of efficient farming system.

Dr. Rowena P. Varela, Consortium Director and Ms. Jan Hope L. Honculada, RA-CCARRD, Caraga Consortium for Agriculture, Forestry and Resources, Research and Development (CCARRD), Caraga Region visited Surigao del Norte College of Agriculture and Technology (SNCAT) Farmers Information Technology Service (FITS), Day-asan, Surigao City last April 3, 2004. They monitored and evaluated the equipment and operational capability of the FITS center. Likewise, the S & T based pineapple production project of Mr. Jacinto C. Maboles, Magsasakang Siyentista, Balibayon, Surigao City was also inspected.
It was found out that there are modest improvements of the structure and management of the center. This could be observed from the linkages initiated and the planned of different newly existed organizations to avail of the services by the center. This is also complemented by the effort of the center to conduct short training workshops to neighboring barangay communities for livelihood programs.
The monitoring and evaluation turned futuristic by the suggestion of the Consortium Director to develop a framework on market chain management even if the program on pineapple production is still at an infant stage. In the long run the market of Surigao City cannot afford to absorb all the production of pineapple of the farmers.
